麻將於1920年代由日本流行文化傳入臺灣，戰後又隨著外省族群遷臺而更加普及，一聲聲清脆的牌響，成為20世紀許多臺灣人熟悉的客廳背景音。因洗牌時雙手在牌桌上來回撥動、狀似蛙式划水，「打麻將」也有「游泳」這個趣味別稱。如今實體牌桌或許不如從前熱鬧，但手遊麻將卻隨時開局。從手洗麻將到線上對戰，麻將不僅早已成為臺灣人心中難以動搖的國粹，更是一種跨世代的解憂娛樂。

麻雀は1920年代、日本の大衆文化を通じて台湾に広まり、戦後、中国大陸から多くの人々が移住したことで、さらに広く親しまれるようになりました。牌がぶつかり合う軽快な音は、20世紀の台湾の家庭でおなじみの「リビングの音」でもありました。牌を混ぜるとき、両手を卓上で動かす姿が平泳ぎに似ていることから、台湾では麻雀をすることをユーモラスに「泳ぐ」と呼ぶこともあります。今では昔ほど麻雀卓を囲む光景を見かけなくなりましたが、スマホならいつでも対局可能。手で牌を混ぜる時代からオンライン対戦まで、麻雀は台湾で長く愛される定番であり、世代を超えて楽しめる娯楽でもあります。

Mahjong became popular in Taiwan through Japanese popular culture in the 1920s, and spread even further after World War II with the arrival of migrants from mainland China. The crisp clatter of mahjong tiles soon became a familiar sound in Taiwanese living rooms throughout the 20th century. When shuffling, players move both hands back and forth across the table, resembling the strokes of a breaststroke swimmer. This gave playing mahjong the playful Taiwanese nickname “swimming.” Today, physical mahjong tables may be less lively than before, but mobile mahjong games are always ready for a match. From hand-shuffled tiles to online games, mahjong has become not only an enduring classic in Taiwan, but also a beloved pastime shared across generations.
